Operational Occurrence and Cumulative Safety Incident visualisations
Between 1 April 2010 and 31 March 2022, the Railway Safety Regulator of South Africa recorded 127 924 adverse events comprising 46 270 Operational Safety Occurrences and 81 654 Security-related Incidents.
Visualisations of dominant adverse events are shown for four major port-linked heavy-haul and general freight rail corridors in two 6-year sets:
- 30 tonnes per axle single line iron ore and manganese export corridor between Sishen and Saldanha Port;
- 26 tonnes per axle double line coal and industrial minerals export corridor between Ermelo and Richards Bay Port;
- 20 tonnes per axle single line general freight and mainline passenger corridor between the Port of Cape Town and the Gauteng Province, including a spur between Postmasburg Kimberley where manganese exports to Gqeberha and domestic iron ore supplies flow;
- 20 tonnes per axle double line general freight and mainline passenger corridor between the Port of Durban and the Gauteng Province dominated by intermodal container and automotive flows.
To highlight the intensity of Security-related Incidents per rail corridor, dominant Operational Safety Occurrences are only flashed on the map when and where they occur, but the red circles persist and grow in relative size for repeat offences during the year.
